With the return of summer comes the next wave of Sunset Cinema, a free monthly film series screened on the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston's Huntington Avenue lawn. Join us on July 12 to kick off the Boston French Film Festival with an outdoor screening of the playful documentary «Faces Places» (2017) by 90-year-old director Agnès Varda, whose experimental films have made her an icon of French cinema, and photographer JR Artist, known for installing large-scale photographs in public places.

We suggest bringing a blanket or low chair, a picnic supper, and nonalcoholic beverages to enjoy during the film. Beer, wine and snacks are available for purchase. Lawn games; music by Dee Diggs; and art-making activities begin at 7 pm. The film starts at sundown, around 8:30 pm.

«Faces Places» follows Varda and JR as the unlikely pair traverses rural France in an eye-catching van, befriending the locals and capturing their likeness in epic-size photos that reveal the humanity of their subjects. The portraits are then wheatpasted onto houses, barns, storefronts, and train cars, leaving a trail of monumental artworks across the French countryside. Nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 90th Academy Awards, Faces Places documents the heartwarming encounters between the artists and their subjects, as well as the tender friendship Varda and JR formed along the way.

The Ruth and Carl J. Shapiro Film Program at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, is funded by the Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family Foundation. Sunset Cinema is supported by the Carlotte and Samuel Berk Fund.
