Join us for the BU Interdisciplinary Arts Lecture — How We See Art & How Artists Make It by Stephen Grossberg. Grossberg is one of the leading pioneers and current research leaders in explaining how our brains give rise to our minds. To do this, he is a cognitive scientist, theoretical and computational psychologist, neuroscientist, mathematician, biomedical engineer, and neuromorphic technologist.

Grossberg and colleagues have developed the most advanced neural models of how our brains consciously see. In this lecture, Grossberg will discuss how different artists have instinctively exploited different combinations of the processes whereby our brains consciously see. Different artists and artistic movements generate easily identifiable works because of their different emphases, illustrated with paintings by 11 different artists. The talk will also provide a self-contained introduction to the brain processes that make the paintings look the way that they do.

A post event reception will be held with light refreshments
