Original Art Quilts from Women’s Quilt Collectives in Haiti.

Haley House Bakery Café
November 13, 2017 through January 6, 2018
Opening Reception: Thursday December 7, 2017 5:30-7pm

The opening reception will take place on December 7 from 5:30-7:00 PM. Small handmade goods and additional quilts made by women in the collectives will be available for purchase.

Haiti has long-been defined by extreme poverty, joblessness and ever-relentless natural disasters. Even so, life still does go on.

In the face of economic challenges, life obstacles, lack of education and opportunity, the women whose quilts are shown in this exhibition repeatedly, consistently depict the intelligence of knowing, the beauty of nature, hope, and the simple pleasures of daily life. These works, moreover, emphatically underscore the perseverance, strength of spirit, and character of the women who create them.

The artists are from quilting cooperatives (collectives) operating in the following communities in Haiti: Lilavois, Port-au-Prince, Damassin, Saut D'Eau, and Cité Soleil. And, beyond providing an opportunity for meaningful, creative work, the quilts, and these collectives are a path to self-sustenance, a place for emotional support and a way to learn the skills needed to run a business.

The collectives underscore the power of pointed purpose. The work allows each woman to unleash her brilliance, creativity, originality and innate talent. Purpose is everything.

About Haiti PeaceQuilts
Haiti PeaceQuilts, a non-profit organization based in Massachusetts, is relieving poverty in Haiti by establishing and supporting independent women’s quilting cooperatives. Currently they work with nearly 100 women providing them with training, materials, supplies, marketing assistance, and educational opportunities. Their goal is to help each cooperative to become a self-managed and self-sustaining enterprise—true economic development.

Every quilt sold generates revenue that goes directly to alleviating poverty and hunger in the poorest country in our hemisphere. For more information on the Haiti PeaceQuilts organization, please visit
