Join us for an evening exploring Pride and Prejudice with Julia Brown, professor of English at Boston University and Howard Eiland, translator and biographer.

One of Jane Austen’s greatest achievements is her masterful portrait of the relations between the sexes in the context of a rapidly changing society.

Our speakers will discuss Austen’s life, describe the socio-historical context of her writing and explore the themes in Pride and Prejudice. They will give particular attention to the ways Austen modernized the ancient theme of the battle of the sexes in Chapters 3 and 10.

Join us by the farmhouse fire for an intimate evening with two distinguished teachers, as we enter into the mind and life of one of the greatest writers of the 19th century. Participants are welcome to B.Y.O.W. (bring your own wine!)

We expect this event to fill quickly: If you are interested, reserve a space!

Julia Brown is the author of books on Jane Austen and Oscar Wilde and is the professor of English at Boston University. Howard Eiland, a critic and translator, taught literature for thirty years at MIT.
