The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston's Musical Instrument Collection was founded in 1917—celebrate this centennial milestone in an evening of special drop-in musical performances all over the MFA!

The event is free with Museum admission.

Hear music throughout the galleries, from the fanfare played on 19th-century trumpets greeting visitors on the Grand Staircase to a strolling accordionist, all played on musical instruments from the collection. Nine performances take place in galleries relating to the instruments:

• Nancy Hurrell playing the portable Irish harp and English dital harp (about 1820) in the English Regency Gallery

• Peter H. Bloom and Olav Chris Henriksen playing French flutes and guitars (19th century) in the 19th-Century European Paintings Gallery

• Brian Clague, Jayme Kurland and Javier Caballero playing the New England violin, viola and cello (early 1800s) in The New Nation Gallery

• Mimi Rabson and Norman Zocher playing the electric violin (1936) and electric lap steel guitar (about 1950) in the American Modernism Gallery

• George Ruckert and Jerry Leake playing the Indian sarod (lute), tabla (drums) and tambura (drone) (about 1970) in the South Asia Gallery

• Kevin Zhen playing the Chinese pipa (lute) (1891) in the Chinese Furniture Gallery

• Malcolm Barsamian playing the Turkish oud (1899) in the Ancient Near East Gallery

• Beth Bahia Cohen and Vasileios Kostas playing the Greek lyra (fiddle) (1981) and laouto (lute) (2012) in the Ancient Greece Gallery

• Peter Sykes playing the French harpsichord (1736), English piano (1796) and German clavichord (1796) in the Musical Instruments Gallery

• Cory Pesaturo playing accordions (1930s–1970s) in the Sharf Visitor Center, Shapiro Family Courtyard and Linde Family Wing for Contemporary Art

• Chris Belluscio, Paul Perfetti and Robin Pyle playing three English natural trumpets (mid-19th century) on the Grand Staircase
