All Saints' Church — Ashmont
209 Ashmont Street, Boston, Massachusetts 02124
Greater Ashmont Main Street and Mandorla Music Series are very pleased to co-present the 2017-2018 quarterly Dot Jazz Series at Peabody Hall in the Parish of All Saints Ashmont. Doors open at 7pm and the $15 ticket includes dessert as well as non-alcoholic beverages. Wine will be available too. Dates for the series as a whole are 8/10/17, 11/9/17, 2/15/18, & 5/10/18
This February date will feature the Eric Hofbauer Quintet. The quintet features Eric Hofbauer on guitar, Todd Brunel on clarinet and bass clarinet, Jerry Sabatini on trumpet, Junko Fujiwara on cello and Curt Newton on drum set. All of the musicians are accomplished jazz and new music improvisers who also perform in classical and modern music settings. With their 'Prehistoric Jazz' releases, Hofbauer’s quintet celebrates the common ground between modern jazz and the works of such 20th century composers as Stravinsky, Messiaen, Ives and Ellington. Volume 1 (Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring) and Volume 2 (Messiaen's Quartet for The End of Time) were featured on NPR’s Fresh Air, as well as appearing on several 2014 year-end ‘best of’ lists for new jazz releases. In 2016, Prehistoric Jazz Volume 3 (Ives' Three Places in New England) was on the Boston Globe’s Top Ten Jazz Albums list, and featured in Downbeat (4 star review), The Wire, Tone Audio, and Textura magazines, among other publications. Their Fall 2017 4th volume features Hofbauer’s arrangement of 'Reminiscing in Tempo,' a rare, long-form, through-composed piece from 1935 by Duke Ellington.
Hofbauer has also recorded a series of acclaimed albums of solo guitar music, including 2016's 'Ghost Frets.'
This concert will feature some solo material, the Ellington suite, and other selections from the Quintet's repertoire.
