How do you form a work from an assorted collection of materials that you have been holding for years? This 1-day workshop will offer a process of developing imagery that combines texts, found materials, and photographs.

Drawing upon an archive of ephemera and imagery can be starting point for making image based works that explore individual experiences and histories within a family, community or culture. Participants will work with their own materials with an interest in either starting a body of imagery or refining and reworking existing projects.

During the morning session we will explore point of view, voice, narrative (and non-narrative) structures, as well as methods for making image based pieces. We will work to sort through the content of our materials, finding the threads of the story within the work. The goal is to establish a starting point for exploration. During the afternoon session participants will work to combine imagery and materials and begin a process that will continue beyond the workshop.

Participants should have a basic knowledge of Photoshop as this is the most effective way to work with archival imagery and materials. Further, participants should be prepared with materials they have gathered and pre-scanned if possible. Details on how to do this will be sent to participants prior to the workshop.
