James Cambronne is a multi-disciplinary artist who works in an interdisciplinary way when practicing an immersive form of installation. Cate McQuaid of the Boston Globe, in her annual end of year article on Boston art exhibitions, called his Proof Gallery installation “Where What Is?” the “most surprising” solo exhibition of 2015. Jim is originally from South Dakota and spent his formative years in South Dakota, Idaho, and Montana. As Resident Artist at the Siouxland Heritage Museums in Sioux Falls South Dakota from 1977-1983 he worked on a series of small paintings that grounded his work in the land and peoples of the Great Plains. Those paintings in method, form and content are at the root of the work he makes and the topics he will discuss during his lecture. Jim will use his twenty-year project the “Days of May”, a single work of art composed of 31 separate paintings, as a vehicle to discuss polyphony, conversation, change and journey. He will speak about traversing spatial, temporal and cultural zones and how traversing those zones shape, bend, enhance, and distort meaning, intention and understanding.

Cambronne is Professor of Fine Art 2D at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. At MassArt, Jim is currently the Graduate Coordinator and lead teacher for the 2D Master of Fine Arts program. Cambronne’s degrees are MFA Painting and Printmaking Yale School of Art and BA Fine Art Augustana University. He has taught drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking to graduates and undergraduates over the past thirty years at MassArt, San Francisco Art Institute, Portland State University, Maine College of Art and Yale University School of Art.
