The Favorite Poem Project, in cooperation with the Boston University School of Education, is accepting applications for the 16th annual Poetry Institute for K-12 Educators at Boston University, July 17-21. We invite teachers and teacher/administrator teams across grade levels—elementary, middle and high school—to apply.

The deadline for applications is July 6th. To apply and for more information, visit: favoritepoem.org/teachers.html

The Institute seeks a range of participants: new and experienced teachers, those who enjoy teaching poetry and those who've shied away from it. One of the Favorite Poem Project's significant goals is enhance and improve the teaching of poetry in the nation's elementary, middle and high school classrooms.

During the week, faculty poets lead seminars on some aspect of poetry, looking closely at specific poems. The poets then give afternoon readings from their own work. The seminars and poetry readings are meant to challenge and inspire participants as teachers and as students. Faculty poets will not necessarily discuss curriculum or ideas about teaching—that kind of discussion will take place in smaller teacher groups—but will engage participants in a discussion of poetry and its elements, from the viewpoint of a practitioner of the art.

A good part of each day is devoted to the question of application: «How do we bring what we're learning to the classroom?» Each day teachers break into groups according to grade levels taught to discuss classroom application of ideas and materials from Favorite Poem video screenings and seminars, and to develop classroom activities. Each of the four groups—elementary, middle and two high school groups—are be led by our “key teachers,” experienced educators, who are involved in planning the Institute.
