About the exhibition:

«Capstone ’17» is a group exhibition of student artworks made in Associate Professor Cat Mazza’s professional practices course, ART 380: Capstone.

On view in the exhibition are artworks, by students: Nia Duong, Rixy Fernandez, Nate Heilman, Stephen Henderson, Joshua Mariano, Basil Nkenchor, Jonathan Obin, Jesus Pizarro, Weronika Polska, Li Wang, Daniel Wong, and Eric Zeller.

The artworks have been selected for their well-considered concepts and exemplary technical execution. Each artist in the exhibition has shown an engaged and critical artistic practice. They represent the diverse approaches to art making currently taking place in the Art Department here at UMass Boston. Although this is the first time that many of these artists are presenting their work publicly, they have participated in the installation of the exhibition and have written corresponding wall texts discussing their artwork. In sculpture, painting, assemblage, and animation, these twelve artists address an impressive variety of issues including memory, aesthetics, global refugee cultures, identity politics, and gender dynamics.

University Hall Gallery would like to express our gratitude to the students of Capstone for
their dedication to the course and this presentation, to Associate Professor Cat Mazza, and to Brian Glaser, Christopher Schade, and Wenhua Shi for their participation in the pop-up critiques sessions leading up to the final presentation. We would also like to thank Dean David Terkla and the College of Liberal Arts for their generous support of the University Hall Gallery.
